Art lesson update

Welcome to the Blog leaving cert art students of 2014-2015

Art Lesson - 6th of October Life Drawing- Gesture Drawing and Portraiture

In this Lesson we practiced Pose 1 and Portrait drawing. The lesson began with gesture drawing of the human figure. We did 30 second drawings to 3 minute drawings. The purpose of gesture drawing is to help us see the human figure in a simpler way, capturing the sense and gesture of the pose, the attitude of the figure eliminating detail. Gesture drawing helps us to loosen up and become more expressive in the way that we draw the human figure. Students then did pose 1 (15 minute drawing) of the full figure. In the second part of the lesson students paired up and took turns drawing each other (head and shoulders) for 30 minutes each. 

Homework: "Selfie" Drawing to be handed in for the 12th of October (Homework that is not handed in will be noted!!)

Create a self portrait from observation. You could do this by looking in a mirror or drawing from a photograph of yourself that includes full head and shoulders or an unusual viewpoint/close-up. Try to make your self portrait express something about you. This can be done through your facial expression, through clothing, including objects/ background information, viewpoint or simply through the use of materials, mark-making and approach. Look at the self portraits below for inspiration and for further ideas look at self portrait paintings online. Have fun with it!:)
















Art lesson - 29th September 2014. Life Drawing - Pose 1 and Marking scheme

Life drawing (Pose 1 in the exam) was the focus of this lesson.
Students began with a memory drawing (10-15 minutes) of the human figure. This challenges you to draw from imagination and memory without any instruction, putting down what you know about the human figure.
After this we looked at examples of observed drawings of the figure (past pupils work) and we discussed these examples under the marking scheme headings. It is important to know the way the drawing exam is marked so that you can focus on those key elements in your own drawing. We looked at positive elements in the drawings and areas for improvement. We discussed proportions of the figure using a model, and how to measure the figures proportions using a pencil as a guide.
Students did a 15 minute drawing of the full figure standing from observation.
Students then got into groups of 4, discussed each others work under the marking scheme headings and helped each other mark and evaluate their work. Lastly students compared the main differences between their memory and observed drawing of the human figure.

Homework; Students must draw details of facial features on the given handout. This handout can be found on the "Life drawing resource" page on the blog.

Art Lesson - 22th of September 2014. Still Life Drawing (The Basics)

In our first art lesson we focused on Still Life Drawing. We looked at the historical context of Still Life over the ages to understand its origins and how it has developed in approach and style. We discussed the important artistic elements of Still Life, such as line, tone, mark-making, form and composition. Students were divided into three groups and were given a selection of different objects. Students had to work together to organize a strong composition that was interesting from different view points. Students began with a line drawing of their objects and developed their drawing during the lesson using mark-making techniques and tonal values to create form and volume.

Homework; Students must create a still life drawing in any media of objects of their choice. The drawing should be A2 in size and be completed over at least a two hour period to show a focused study of the objects chosen.
